Towing in Clarkson: what an Ocean Keys car park call-out actually looks like

We are based in Clarkson, so if you have ever wondered why a tow truck seems to turn up quickly around here — that is why. The Ocean Keys Shopping Centre car park is, without exaggeration, the single address we get called to more than any other in Perth. Not because anything is wrong with it, but because it is where thousands of people park a car, do a shop, come back, and find out something has changed.

This is one of those jobs written up properly, so you can see what actually happens between the phone call and your car being back where it needs to be.

The call: “it was fine this morning”

It is a Tuesday, just after 4pm. A woman calls from the rooftop level at Ocean Keys. Her car turned over fine on the way in, she has done a shop, and now it will not start. Dash lights come on, then everything dims when she turns the key. Two people have already offered to help her push it.

That description tells us a lot before we have even left. Lights on, dimming under load, no crank — that is a battery or a connection nine times out of ten. So the first thing we do is not book a tow. We ask three questions:

1. 1What level are you on, and can you tell us the nearest lift or entry point? Rooftop and upper decks change which truck we send.
2. 2Does anything happen at all when you turn the key — a click, a slow crank, or nothing?
3. 3Has the car done anything odd in the last week? Slow starts on cold mornings, dash lights flickering, anything.

She says it has been slow to start for about a fortnight, worse in the mornings. That is a battery on its last legs telling you well in advance, which most of us politely ignore until it stops the car entirely.

Why the Ocean Keys car park is its own kind of job

Shopping centre car parks are not open road. They come with constraints that decide how the job runs:

• Clearance. Undercover levels and ramps have height limits. A flatbed tilt tray with its deck up is tall. We plan the route in and out before we arrive, not after.
• Space to tilt. A tray needs a run of clear ground behind it to slide down and winch a car on. In a full car park at 4pm, that space has to be found and sometimes politely negotiated with the cars either side.
• Traffic. Everyone else is trying to leave. Blocking a lane for fifteen minutes at school pick-up time is how you turn one person's bad day into forty people's bad day.
• Centre management. Larger centres like to know a truck is on site. A quick heads-up avoids a much slower conversation later.

None of this is dramatic. It is just the difference between a driver who has done a hundred car park jobs and one who has not.

What we actually did

1. 1Arrived, found her on the level she described, and parked where the truck was visible but not blocking the through lane.
2. 2Checked the terminals first. They were furred up but tight — not the whole story.
3. 3Put a jump pack on it. It cranked, caught, and ran. That is not a fix; it is information. A battery that will not hold charge will do exactly this and then strand you again in the next car park.
4. 4Tested the charging system with the engine running. Voltage was where it should be, which pointed at the battery rather than the alternator.
5. 5Gave her the honest choice: drive it straight to a workshop now while it is running and risk it, or let us tray it there so it does not strand her a second time on Marmion Avenue.

She chose the tow. The car went onto the tray, strapped at the wheels rather than the chassis, and off to her mechanic in Butler. Total time from her phone call to the truck pulling out of the car park: a bit under an hour, most of which was us driving there and then testing rather than towing.

What you can do before the truck arrives

• Stay with the car if it is safe to do so — we need someone to point us at it, and car parks all look the same.
• Note your level and the nearest entry, lift or bay number. It saves us circling.
• Put the handbrake on and leave the car in neutral if it is a manual, park if it is an auto. We will adjust from there.
• Get anything you need out of the boot before it is on the tray. Reaching a boot at deck height is possible but nobody enjoys it.
• If your car has a wheel lock, keyless start quirk or aftermarket immobiliser, mention it on the phone. These things matter more than people expect.

Where the car usually ends up

From Clarkson, most cars go to a local workshop in Clarkson, Butler or Merriwa, or home to a driveway so the owner can sort a repair on their own timeline. Both are completely normal.
